There’s something about the start of a new year and new books to read that just thrills me (it must have something to do with loving my job). I feel it now even if I haven’t finished the gargantuan list of books from previous years. I’m paging through the latest “Horn Book Magazine” and making lists of books to buy and books to read and completely oblivious to the fact (except right here) that there’s no way in heaven or hell I’ll get to read all these books.
I cannot make a new year’s resolutions to read more. Rather, I’ll just continue to savor the books I do get to read and promise myself not to be a “completist.” It’s really the only way … If I start a series just to see what it’s like and am not particularly in thrall with it, I must tell myself that I do not have to finish it (i.e. Catherine Fisher’s "Relic Master" series) and if I start a book that has gotten good reviews but just doesn’t grab me, I don’t have to finish it (like Shine by Lauren Myracle – oh, yes, part of me does want to finish it, but just not enough). In this way I hope to get more books read. Maybe. We'll see.
Happy New Year and Happy Reading!
